About the Black Squirrel

Scientific Name: Sciurus carolinensis

Due to their rare occurrence taxidermy mounts of Black Squirrels are not easy to come by. The black squirrel is a "melanistic" subgroup of the eastern gray squirrel and the fox squirrel. It is not a separate species of squirrel.  The black fur color is a mutation in populations of gray squirrels, but it is rare. Because of their dark fur, they are better disguised in the dense, dark forests of the eastern United States. The black skin allows them to absorb more of the sun's heat keeping them warmer in the winter months.

They are mainly found in the Midwestern and Northeastern United States and are also found in Britain, Quebec, and Ontario. There is a particularly large population in Kent, Ohio because they were introduced to the area by a scientist who was hoping to study the impact on the local ecosystem. They store food in trees, underground, and in other secret locations, and will build nests in trees to stay dry and warm. The diet of the Black Squirrel is varied and adaptable, consisting of nuts, berries, and other plant material.
