African Crested Porcupine

Scientific Name: Hystrix cristata

African Crested Porcupine taxidermy mounts are interesting pieces for any collections. The African Crested Porcupine is the largest porcupine in the world. The black and white quills on the porcupines back are used as a defense mechanism when they feel threatened.  The quills can be about 13.8 inches in length and are marked with alternating light and dark bands. They have an average and body length of 23.6-32.7 inches not counting the tail. They can weigh up to 59.5 lbs.

The crested porcupine can be found in Italy, North and Sub-Saharan Africa. They are mostly herbivores. They eat roots, bulbs and leaves but occasionally they do consume insects, small vertebrates, and carrion. So that they can get calcium and sharpen their incisors, they will consume bones. They often travel long distances in search of food.

They are terrestrial animals, but on rare occasions, they will climb trees. The African Crested Porcupine can swim, and are mostly nocturnal.
