About the Bison

Bison, symbolic animals of the Great Plains, are often mistakenly called buffaloes. By any name, they are formidable beasts and considered to be the largest land animals in North America. There are two types of bison in North American. The plains bison found in North America and the woods bison of western Canada.
Bison stand some 5 to 6.5 feet tall at the shoulder, and can weigh over a ton. Despite their massive size, bison are fast and can run at speeds up to 40 miles an hour. Two distinctive features of bison are the shoulder hump and their huge head. Fur color is brown, varying slightly from the front and back of the animal. The hair is longer in the front than in the rear. The distinction between hair length is most noticeable in males. The horns are black, curving upward and inward and ending in a sharp tip.
These large grazers feed on plains grasses, herbs, shrubs, and twigs. Females (cows) and adult males (bulls) generally live in small, separate bands and come together in very large herds during the summer mating season. Males battle for mating primacy, but such contests rarely turn dangerous.
